Please Stop Telling Me How To Dress! My Dress My Choice.
03:10
The sad story of women being stripped
for 'indecent dressing' has sparked a lot of reactions regarding the issue.
After the Embassava
saga, I am left to wonder what society’s definition of ‘decent dressing’ is. The
stripping of a woman by Embassava touts in Nairobi has caused sharp reactions.
This is not the first time that a woman has been stripped especially by touts
in Kenya. However, what was different this time was that the incident was
caught on camera by a passerby who uploaded it on YouTube. The video is truly
shocking and is difficult to get through to the end. The woman is surrounded by
a mob of men who go ahead to strip her amid her screams and cries for help. In their
attempt to ‘correct’ the young lady for wearing a mini-skirt, the perverted
touts proceed to attempt to strip her of her top. One is left to wonder whether
indeed their main aim is to correct the young woman or to quench their lustful
intent in them. This is what I like to call making provision for the flesh.
1 Timothy
2:9:
I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety,
adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or
expensive clothes. (NIV)
Through this verse, God gives us a
simple and clear yet general instruction. Every woman in her right state of
mind is aware of all these and is therefore aware of what she wears to wherever
she is going to. Male sexuality is over celebrated
in most of society. Female bodies are sexualized and the thought of as being
for the consumption and enjoyment of men.
In short,
men are not used to women owning their own bodies and doing things that are not
for men. It confuses and sometimes angers them.
On the other
hand, I expect men to treat women with respect. If a woman dresses to attract
attention, then she cannot complain if she attracts bad attention. I would prefer
it if there was some form of moderation - men are expected to dress
conservatively, and with taste, why shouldn't women? I don't slut shame, but I
think that women should be respected for more than the shape of their bodies
and what they wear.
A wrong and
another wrong do not make a right. Stripping a woman of her clothes will not
teach her a lesson.
Ladies, what
attracts man’s attention does not always attract his respect. What turns a man’s
head does not always turn his heart.
Destroy the idea that men should respect women because we are their daughters, mothers, and sisters. reinforce the idea that men should respect women because we are people.
